In the 19th century, a craze for all things Japanese changed the course of Western art. Looking East explores the movements and artists affected by this phenomenon, including the great impressionist and post-impressionist painters Vincent van Gogh, Mary Cassatt, Edgar Degas, Paul Gauguin and Claude Monet. The exhibition consists of more than 170 objects from the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, including decorative arts, paintings, prints, drawings and textiles. Juxtaposing Western masterpieces with rare works by prominent Japanese artists, Looking East reveals the renewed vision and stylistic ingenuity that emerged during this invigorating cross-cultural moment. See it now at the Asian Art Museum in San Francisco.
