Tomorrow, Thursday 6-17 is Dump the Pump Day!

Tomorrow, Thursday, June 17th is National Dump the Pump Day and the Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA) is encouraging you to leave their cars at home and take transit.

Public transportation is a crucial part of the solution to the nation’s economic, energy, and environmental challenges. It is also a great way to save money!

Sponsored by the American Public Transportation Association (APTA), the 2010 National Dump the Pump Day focuses on saying “no” to the car and “yes” to public transportation to help reduce carbon footprints and dependence on oil while reducing travel costs incurred by driving.

The average household spends 18 cents of every dollar on transportation; 94% of that cost goes to buying, maintaining, and operating cars – the largest expenditure after housing.

Research shows that by eliminating one car in a multi-car household and using public transportation instead saves up to $10,000 a year. VTA staff asked members of the public what they would do with $10,000 more a year. Answers ranged from saving it and paying bills to landscaping yards and taking vacations.

What will you do with your savings? Save money and the environment on National Dump the Pump Day this Thursday, June 17th!
