Tomorrow is the 14th annual Take Your Bike To Work Day, and the people at Genentech no how to do it the right way. Employees at the South San Francisco firm will compete in tricycle races, get gratis bike tune-ups, munch on barbecue, and have their bikes parked by bike "valets". In other Bay Area locations, there will be "energizer stations" with free juice, bagels and bananas. Some Bay Area ferries will offer free rides to those taking part in Take Your Bike To Work Day, and the only proof you'll need is, well, a bike. Take it easy though because it looks like tomorrow will be the hottest day of the year to date.
If you really have to have something to celebrate today, I guess you could do worse than the 50th birthday of Velcro. Swiss engineer George de Mestral came up with the idea in the 1940s after studying burrs that stuck to his dog's fur and his wool pants during a walk in the woods. He named his invention Velcro, a combination of "velour" and "crotchet," the French words for velvet and hook. Production began in France in 1958, and then moved to Manchester NH where they had a big blow-out earlier this week.
Manchester's a very small town.
