"Alright, Andrew. You can have an end of summer party here at the house, and you can invite all of your friends." That's what Kim and I told our 14 year old a couple of months back. I don't know what we were thinking. It must have been a moment of weakness, because neither of us are big drinkers. The big day, last Saturday, was approaching. Andrew sent out the invite via his Facebook page, and came up with a guest list of about 20 young men and women. A promise is a promise, so we forged ahead. I called earlier in the day to arrange to have the pizza arrive between 6:30 and 7. The gang started to show a little after 6, and the pies right on time. Never in a million years would I have though I'd ever pay close to 90 dollars (incl. tip for the driver) on pizza. They attacked the first of two party pies, and picked it clean. Think piranha. The second went untouched..for about an hour. Then that one was history. Juice Squeezes and water from Costco, along with a veggie tray, and the kids seemed to be happy. Some were taking turns playing Guitar Hero on the Wii, and others just talking. Then sundown...movie time. We set up the screen in the back yard, dragged out the DVD projector and showed "21", the Kevin Spacey movie about the card-counting MIT students. We timed it so the movie would end a half hour before parents started picking up. There was some interest in the film, but most were more into sitting on blankets and talking. I just had to lay the law down twice. Once I had to keep some kids from sitting on the deck railing, and then I had to put an end to the throwing of cherry tomatoes from Kim's veggie platter."Hey, NO produce tossing!" Other that that, very well behaved. Parents showed up right on time to pick up their kids (11:00), and right on time to see Michael Phelps swim for #8. We all had a blast, even Kim & I.
