Staying on topic: Up until now, only one woman has ever held the position of "gripman" on the SF Cable Car system. Fannie Barnes retired in 2002. But earlier this month Willa Johnson became the second woman in history to have that job, which requires plenty of stamina, not to mention upper body strength. Training for the job takes about a month. 80 percent of the applicants fail the training program. Ms. Johnson says that see just needs to put some work into her bell ringing technique!
The San Francisco's Anchor Steam brewery is changing ownership after being in the hands of appliance heir Fritz Maytag for more than 45 years. His leadership saved the Gold Rush era brewery from bankruptcy when he bought it in 1965. Maytag also sparked the revival of "craft brewing". New owners Keith Greggor and Tony Foglio plan to expand Anchor's operations. Geez, I hope they don't mess it up.
